ATTORNEY FOR SEPHARDIC JEWS: Spanish Nationality

ATTORNEY FOR SEPHARDIC JEWS: Spanish Nationality

Sephardic Jews can apply for Spanish Nationality through the general process called CARTA DE NATURALEZA. The process is for those persons that can prove that they are descendants of the Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492 and that maintain a special relationship with Spain. Thus, is the Council of Ministers which decides if the said circumstances exist and takes the final decision on whether to grant or not the nationality.

Spanish government officials claim that around 3 million Jews from Spanish descent live around the world primarily in Israel, Latin America, Turkey, France and the United States. Once this law is implemented, people with Sephardic ancestors will be able to apply and receive a Spanish passport through the Law of Spanish Citizenship Sephardic Jews, without renouncing their original citizenship. As citizens of a member country of the European Union, they will enjoy easier access to opportunities to study, work and live in Europe.

Our expert in lmmigration is reponsible for advising the Sephardic Jews who would like to apply for Spanish citizenship. Applicants must formalize their requests for Spanish citizenship within three years after the Law became effective (from October 1st 2015). This deadline can be extended for an additional year by agreement of the Council of Ministers. The process is conducted electronically, with a deadline for resolution of twelve months from the date of entry of the record at the Directorate General of Registries and Notaries under article 4.2 of Law 12/201 5.

Our expert lawyer, Pablo Soto, traveled to Israel last year to meet with several attorneys and clients, visiting the Consulate and the Cervantes Institute, who recommended to make special preparation for the language test (level A2 DELE or higher) required by the Law 12/2015, and the CCSE test to prove constitutional and cultural knowledge of Spain. Cervantes Institute in Tel Aviv indicated that knowledge of the ladino is not enough to pass the test at A2 level. The Cervantes lnstitute offers special courses for the Spanish Language test. Our Firm also help clients to improve their Spanish tests scores, specially for the CCSE exam.
